In its constant effort to improve the service for guests and modernise its facilities, RIU Hotels & Resorts has just announced the introduction of wireless internet in its hotels on the American continent. Guests at RIU’s resorts in Mexico, Punta Cana (Dominican Republic), Jamaica, the Bahamas, Aruba, Florida (United States) and Costa Rica can now enjoy a high quality internet connection in all the communal areas and rooms. What’s more, in the hotels of the Riu Palace range, this service will be free from 1 November.

The hotels of the Riu Classic range will still offer free internet access in the lobby, and guests will now also have the option to purchase a connection in the rooms and other communal areas. Guests of Riu Palace, the most luxurious holiday range, will enjoy this extra service for free from 1 November.

Thanks to this, all RIU guests will be able to connect to the internet using their own devices in all the communal areas and rooms. And for guests not travelling with their own equipment, there will still be the ‘Business corners’ in the Sports Bars and Lounge 24. Here, guests can pay for the use of a computer and connection, as has been the case up until now.

Puerto Plata is the last destination to incorporate this service. There, the Riu Bachata will soon begin work to install the necessary equipment to be able to offer it.

For many low-income Americans, Internet access is a luxury they can’t afford.

Too bad they don’t live in South Korea.By the end of this year, South Koreans will have access to Internet speeds that are more than 200 times faster than what most Americans have, and they can have it for just $27 a month, or slightly more than half the average price Americans pay.

South Korea is among several countries where people can find speedier and cheaper Internet access than in the United States, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). It’s also a place where nearly everyone is online. More than 94 percent of South Koreans have high-speed connections — compared with about 70 percent in the United States, according to the OECD.

As Democrats convene this week in Charlotte and outline their plan to jumpstart the economy, an important tool for implementing that strategy — high-speed Internet connectivity — is missing in the homes of millions of Americans. Many experts say a blueprint for expanding Internet access in America can be found abroad, where several countries have increased Internet adoption by regulating Internet service or declaring Internet access a legal right.

About 100 million people, or one third of the country, lack home access to broadband Internet, according to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). A fast, reliable Web connection has become a vital platform for finding jobs, starting a small business, accessing online education, and helping Americans compete in a global economy.

One of the biggest reasons people give for not subscribing to high-speed Internet is that it’s too expensive. In 2010, the average monthly broadband bill was $40. That’s up from $34.50 in May 2008, according to surveys conducted by the FCC and Pew Research Center.

Internet providers say comparisons between the United States and other countries are flawed. But consumer groups argue that other countries offer better deals — and have greater levels of Internet adoption — because there is more competition in the market. Experts say the FCC should create policies which would ensure more companies compete to provide Internet service and keep prices low.

HuffPost Live will be taking a comprehensive look at the persistence of poverty in America Sept. 5 from 12-4 p.m. EDT and 6-10 p.m. EDT. Click here to check it out — and join the conversation.

Here are five countries where Internet access is faster and cheaper than in the United States, according to the OECD:

			Korea
South Korea has long boasted some of the world’s fastest and most accessible Internet. More than 94 percent of South Koreans have high-speed connections. In addition, the South Korean government has pledged to give its citizens access to 1 Gigabit per second Internet by the end of this year — a speed more than 200 times faster than the average household connection in the United States. “South Korean homes now have greater Internet access than we do,” President Barack Obama said during his 2011 State of the Union address.

			Finland
In 2010, Finland became the first country in the world to make broadband Internet access a legal right for all citizens. That’s right: every one of the country’s 5.3 million people will have guaranteed access to a high-speed Internet connection. Meanwhile, in the United States, about 19 million people have no access to high-speed Internet where they live. Finland isn’t stopping there. It plans to make lightning fast 100-megabit broadband service a legal right by the end of 2015.

			Sweden
Swedish broadband is twice as fast and costs one-third the price of broadband in the U.S., according to a study by the New America Foundation. In 2007, a 75-year-old woman from central Sweden made headlines when she was given the world’s fastest internet connection. She could download a full high-definition DVD in just two seconds.

			Japan
Japan has some of the cheapest Internet connections in the world, according to the OECD. Japan’s government has offered companies generous tax incentives to invest in fiber-optic cables.

“The Japanese think long-term,” a technology consultant told The New York Times in 2007. “If they think they will benefit in 100 years, they will invest for their grandkids. There’s a bit of national pride we don’t see in the West.”

			France
“Consumer broadband prices in France
are now among the most affordable in the world,” according to a study by Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society. The study attributed the low prices to regulations that allow rival Internet providers to share access to broadband infrastructure. France is also one of several countries that have declared Internet access “a basic human right.”

For 3 years I have been a nomadic expat, for 3 years I have battled to find an easy accessible and cheap way to connect while on the road. Why? Well I don’t always stay in hotels where internet access has now become part of the package, although not all hotels offer this service for free and for those who do I am eternally grateful.Holiday flats also offer the option of connecting to a specific service provider but at quite a hefty fee for a holiday maker who needs to be connected at all times.Try use an internet connect card from your service provider and you may as well mortgage your home for your trip as well. Lucky are those who have their corporate accounts to keep connected anywhere in the world. For the small business owner, or the employees who do not have this as a company benefit when traveling, good luck.I often travel to destinations where I can vacation with friends or family or simply reside in holiday apartments which offer space and convenience. However, it requires me devising improved ways of connecting with the outside world with the required connection speed. In my efforts to find better solutions, I have converted most of my family members to broadband and wifi in their homes. Back at home base and I am comfortably settled into my unlimited bandwidth and if I am disconnected for the odd reason or two, I can frequent a hotspot to complete my work without fee payments or bandwidth worries. Some of the countries I have visited have proven impossibly difficult to obtain easy, accessible and convenient pc cards. One of these was South Africa, I was confronted with the requirements for the variety documents to obtain a simple sim card to connect to the internet ludicrous. Once I had acquired a card it was immensely expensive, I was buying airtime nearly every 2 days at an obscene expense that eventually became unaffordable.Fast forward to our first
visit to Cyprus, we bought a sim card for our Vodafone laptop connection. It did not work, it would not work due to the fact that we bought the USB Vodafone modem in South Africa, and it proved not to be compatible with the Cyprus Vodafone sim card. Please explain that? We had to go through a local service provider to get ourselves set up, in the interim we used a connection in the hotel at great expense. This year I have looked for hotspots to connect to on my travels, this is relatively inexpensive if you can find the right hotspot with the right service provider. In some countries you find free hotspot points in parks, in others I have found them in airports, coffee shops, restaurants, Bed and Breakfasts, hotels, and hospitals to name a few. You just have to know where to look and then seek and find.So although there is no simple solution to travelling and having instant internet connection at a normal local rate and in the area you have decided to reside in for that moment, you can find hotspots and some service providers in some countries that are user friendly, cost effective and a lifesaver. What are your thoughts on connecting when on the road?I have listed some service providers below that provide payable hotspots :http://www.alwayson.co.za

Great news Skype friends! Skype is setting out to make travel a little more pleasant this holiday season by offering a free hour of Internet access to third-party wireless hotspots within the Skype WiFi hotspot footprint in select airports across the U.S. From December 21st thru December 27th, travelers passing through or delayed in over 50 airports across the country will be able to access third-party hotspots using Skype WiFi and connect with loved ones via a Skype video or voice call for free.*

Skype WiFi is available to travelers on PCs, Macs and iOS devices.** To get started make sure you’ve downloaded the latest version of Skype for Windows or Skype for Mac, or have downloaded the Skype WiFi app on your iOS device. Once you have signed in with a valid Skype ID, check your wireless network connection to see if you are in a supported hotspot. It’s that simple.

The holidays are all about connecting with those you love. Skype is excited to help you maintain these meaningful connections wherever you may be this holiday season. A voice or video call via Skype when you can’t be together for the holidays is the next best thing to being there. For more information on Skype WiFi please visit http://www.skype.com/go/skypewifi/.

Skype also encourages you to tweet with the hashtag #freeskypewifi and tell us how free Skype WiFi made your travels a little more enjoyable.

*Skype to Skype calling is free, calls to landlines or mobiles cost just a little using Skype Credit or a Skype Subscription.**iOS devices include iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad.

Wednesday, 8 August 2012 04:53 Switzerland is one of the best holiday destinations of the world, with lovely sights and plenty of wonderful activities. But with today’s hectic and availability-at-all-times lifestyle, one’s recreation suffers, even when on vacation. So, Spillmann/Felser/Leo Burnett, client Switzerland Tourism and production partner smly Social Media decided to help those people. High up in the mountains, we found a cabin that had no internet connection and no mobile reception. People could win the chance to spend their holidays here, connection free! Because the campaign was directed at online junkies, it also took place online, over www.holidayswithoutinternet.com On the site you saw, Sebi and Paul, the two mountaineers from Switzerland Tourism Advertising, sitting in front of their laptops and chatting with each other. Via Facebook, a user could connect with them, then the two analyzed the personal Facebook profile of the user. They commented on photos, posts and even analyzed how much time the user spent on Facebook. The two then recommended those Facebook junkies holidays without internet and no mobile phone reception. www.facebook.com Keep an eye on this posts:
